Maca
An herb grown in Peru, maca has long been used to promote hormone balance (in men and women) as well as reproductive and menstrual health. Each of the thirteen differently colored varieties of maca exerts distinct effects, and many maca-based supplements combine different varieties of the herb. Some of these can raise estrogen levels, which means that for the Mother, it is critical to identify a mix that contains the right varieties of maca in the right ratios to help address your estrogen dominance.
The particular maca supplement I recommend for a Mother is Femmenessence MacaHarmony, a 100 percent organic and vegan mixture of sustainably farmed maca that has been shown to have a balancing effect on womenâs levels of estrogen, progesterone, and other hormones. I recommend taking the supplement as directed on the label: two 500 mg tablets daily, taken away from meals. Take the first dose in the morning, before breakfast, and the second dose in the early evening, ideally 30 minutes before you normally experience an energy low. Consider taking half the recommended amount for two weeks, then gradually increasing to the standard amount.
Two notes of caution with regard to MacaHarmony: First, I recommend that a Mother take this supplement for two to three months and then take a week off. This can help upregulate your estrogen receptors and enhance the supplementâs benefits. Second, MacaHarmony can amplify the effects of caffeine.
